Donation pages can sometimes be targets for spam or card testing (bots). If you notice an uptick in fraudulent activity on your Donation page, enabling reCAPTCHA can restrict it.

Fraudulent activity can be identified by one or several of the following:

  • Excessive declines submitted with illegitimate information (For example: sdkosd gdjios listed as a name)

  • Excessive declines submitted under $5

  • Excessive declines submitted in a very short amount of time

  • Payments refunded because the cards were reported as stolen

To prevent this from happening in excess, you can enable a reCAPTCHA on your page.

Select Basic Setup under the Settings dropdown in your page builder.

Check the box to enable Recaptcha.

Save and publish your changes.

The great news is this setting will not be inconvenient to the legitimate donor. We do not require any participation from the donor for the standard donation to be submitted.

Instead, if a submission is determined to have an unacceptable fraud score, it will be blocked. This will quickly deter bot testing in particular.

FAQs

I enabled the reCAPTCHA but I still see a donation that looks suspicious?

Keep in mind that it might take one or several attempts for a bot or fraudulent person to meet the criteria for an unacceptable fraud score. This is not cause for alarm in most cases.

What if a fraudulent attempt is successfully charged?

This is very rare. In addition to GivingFuel, the processing gateway you've partnered with also has precautions in place to detect fraud. You will have many opportunities to correct this should a submission be successful.
